WHITE WATER RAFTING
WHITE WATER rafting is an exhilarating adventure sport that requires navigating frothy,
fast-flowing stretches of a ‘young’ river that twists, turns and tumbles headlong
over rocks and boulders, through mountains and gorges. Your boat is an inflatable
rubber dinghy that can be pulled up on shore and delated to be carried alongside
where the river is too rough to be navigated. White water rafting is a team sport
and though individuals on single kayaks can often be seen on white water, they are
usually experienced and, even then, will rarely be along.
The rivers that flow through the Himalayas are nicely suited for this sport. There
are very few stretches that have a very high level of difficulty. Most can be handled
by the amateur under trained supervision. There are also so-called ‘spectator trips’
where the guide does all the paddling and all others sit back and enjoy unless they
want to add muscle power. No special training is required – but it helps if you can
swim!
This itinerary takes you rafting on the Ganga near Rishikesh in the foothills of
the Himalayas where the rapids fo not have a very dangerous vertical gradient. Most
of the rapids are names. Some of these names sound a wrning, others are whimsical,
yet others, an insider joke that your guide may interpret if you ask.
